Hello everyone and welcome to our very LAST book and film comparison for the Hunger Games series! I’m so excited to write this because there were A LOT of differences.
So let’s jump into it!
Right in the beginning of the film we immediately see a difference right when it starts and that is them showing the “Dark Days.” In the film it shows young Coriolanus and Tigris walking through the capital during this time, instead of in the book where it only told us. We also learn in the film that Coriolanus’ father died in District 12. They never told us where he died in the book. Then in the book it makes sure to state how the Snow family lost their fortune and that was from District 13 getting destroyed. In the film they don’t tell us how they ended up poor and just immediately show us their run down apartment.
The next difference is the characters in the story not knowing what happened to Clemensia. In the book Clemensia ends up getting hospitalized by getting bitten by snakes when Dr. Gaul made her try to grab an assignment in the tank full of them. Coriolanus was able to see what her condition was like in the book once she was allowed visitors. Then later on in the book, a very traumatized Clemensia rejoins the group of mentors to finish off the games. However, in the film after they show her getting bitten by the snakes she kind of just disappeared without any questioning/explanation.
Another difference was the drones the capital/sponsors would send into the arena. In the book the mentors tried sending food and water to their tribute through drone for the first time ever. But, in the film they show the drones working very poorly and they ended up breaking.
The next difference is the hanging tree. In the book both Lucy Gray and Coriolanus were there for the hanging of one of the District 12 citizens, which is how Lucy Gray ended up writing the iconic hanging tree song that is used throughout the Hunger Games series. However, in the book Lucy Gray was not present for the hanging. I honestly wished they had her there at the hanging because she is the one who wrote the song and I feel like that needed to be shown better for the audience to know.
The next difference and honestly a big difference there was, was Maude Ivory. My girl, my queen. She is mentioned and is present in the book many times and actually spent a lot of time with her sister, Lucy Gray and Coriolanus. However, in the movie they only show her for a minute introducing the Covey music group at the hob and that’s all of the screen time she gets. I feel like they should’ve added her more because she was a good uplifting and comedic character to have. Not only that, but she also gave a subtle connection to Katniss and Primrose Everdeen.
Then finally, the last difference was, Tigris. UGGHHH I LOVE HER. We actually got to see more of her in the film, than we did in the book. In the book during the epilogue we only see Coriolanus having a conversation with Dean Highbottom. BUUTT, in the film we see Coriolanus return home to his family’s apartment where we first get introduced to Tigris and their grandmother. I thought Tigris ate in this film and Hunter Schafer did everything and more for this character.
Then those were all of the things that stuck out the most to me! I’m sad that my Hunger Games comparisons are done, but hey maybe I’ll make another once the new Sunrise on The Reaping film comes out. I hope you all enjoyed going through my Hunger Games phase with me! Make sure to comment any other differences you noticed in the comments!
